In September of this year, it was announced that there was a new Call for Submissions process open to all WA Local Governments to work with the State Government, through the Department of Communities, to deliver social housing, affordable rental housing, Government Regional Officer Housing, Local Government Officer Housing, and key worker and service worker accommodation.
The Avon Community Development Foundation (ACDF), looking to continue with Stage 2 of the Mortlock Gardens Project, has requested that the Shire of Northam make a submission to seek funding towards site works and servicing. This development involves the delivery of 20 dwellings that would be affordably priced rental accommodation for key workers. The ACDF has advised that they are in the process of delivering 4 of these dwellings and that the site works and servicing for the remaining 16 lots would be the subject of this submission.
A cost-benefit analysis has been undertaken to determine the feasibility of this project, and following favourable results, Council has moved to support this development by acting as the funding applicant. As a result, the Shire of Northam intends to seek funding of $1.5million to assist with costs associated with the remaining 16 lot development, and if successful will enter into a Project Delivery Agreement with the ACDF to ensure that relevant Shire Policies are adhered to, such as spending as much locally as possible.
Given the success that ACDF has had with Mortlock Garden Stage 1, it is anticipated that should this application be successful and the project go ahead, that a number of benefits will be seen for the region; not least of which being significant economic injection into the community by visiting key workers.
