KidSport Regional Pools Program (KRPP)

DLGSC is partnering with targeted local governments including the Shire of Northam to deliver the State Government's KidSport Regional Pools Program. The program seeks to increase physical activity and water awareness of children aged 5 to18 years by subsidising the cost of access to community pools in target regional areas. Eligible children can access funding equivalent to the cost of a seasonal pass for pool entry at Northam Aquatic facility and Wundowie Swimming pool.

Notice is hereby given for public information and comment that the Shire of Northam has received an application to amend the Shire of Northam Local Planning Scheme No. 6 for the purpose of rezoning identified properties in the Wundowie town centre from Commercial to Rural Townsite to increase flexibility in permissible land uses in accordance with the objectives of the Northam Local Planning Strategy.

New CCTV Camera Trial

In response to consistent feedback from the community highlighting the importance of safety in the Shire, we are launching a two-month trial of mobile CCTV units to improve security in the Shire of Northam. The first leased unit has been installed at the youth precinct, a known hotspot identified by our Community Safety Committee. After three weeks, the unit may be relocated to another area requiring surveillance.

Classes are back in session! We're going to kick things off with a complimentary "come and try" session on Tuesday, 19th November, from 9:15 AM to 10:15 AM. It's the perfect opportunity to experience what we offer and see if it suits you without paying a fee. Following this, our regular paid classes will resume on Thursday, 21st November. On Friday, a heartfelt gathering took place in Apex Park as Julie Head, along with Shire staff, Councillors, family, and friends, celebrated the unveiling of a memorial park bench dedicated to Ray Head. The bench, thoughtfully placed on the site of an old wishing well, holds special significance as it is in close proximity of where Julie and Ray captured their wedding photos.

The Water Corporation are upgrading hydrants and valves in Northam to improve the security and reliability of the water network in town.  Works will take place at the intersection of Minson Avenue and Grey Street starting on Monday, 16 September. The quarantine area (QA) within metropolitan Perth has been extended as the spread of Polyphagous Shot-Hole Borer continues. Polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB) Euwallacea fornicatus is a beetle native to Southeast Asia. The beetle attacks a wide range of plants by tunnelling into trunks, stems and branches. Detection of PSHB is difficult as they are very small – about the size of a sesame seed.

From 2023 to 2025 more plastic items, such as non-compostable produce bags, coffee cups, and takeaway containers, are being banned across Western Australia in an effort to reduce plastic pollution. • From 1 September 2024, plastic containers, bowls and trays used in eat-in or takeaway food services, and non-compostable produce bags for fresh fruit and vegetables, will be banned.

The Local Government Act 1995 s.3.12, requires the Shire of Northam to give public notice of the intent to enact the Bush Fire Brigade Local Law 2024. The purpose of the proposed Bush Fire Brigades Local Law 2024 is to make provisions about the establishment and organisation of bush fire brigades. The effect of the proposed Bush Fire Brigades Local Law 2024 is to align the Shire of Northam Bushfire Brigades Local Law with legislative requirements under the Bush Fires Act 1954 and operational practice.
