Northam Re-Use Water Scheme Funding Announcement

At an event held at Northam’s Henry Street Oval on Tuesday April 10, two candidates for the Federal
seat of Bullwinkel, Mia Davies from the National Party and Matt Moran from the Liberal Party, as well as
Deputy Leader of the National Party, Senator Perin Davey, made an election commitment
of $10,000,000 towards the upgrade and expansion of the Northam Re-Use Water Scheme.

Critical works are required to upgrade and expand the Northam Water Re-Use Scheme, which are
planned across three stages. Stages one and two will focus on the replacement and upgrading of
existing infrastructure to ensure functionality and future expansion, and stage three will incorporate the
construction of a winter storage facility, as well as the upgrading of pumps and chlorination systems.

The Northam Re-use Water Scheme is managed by the Shire of Northam, who have advocated for
necessary upgrades and improvements in recent years. The re-use water is used by the Shire primarily
for the irrigation of a number of public parks and ovals, and by local schools and community groups
responsible for the upkeep of green spaces, which would not be possible on scheme water alone.

Shire of Northam President Chris Antonio said “Upgrades to Northam’s Water Re-Use Scheme have
been very much needed for some time. This system is vital to greening of our public and recreation
spaces in Northam, particularly in a drying climate and the use of the recycled water contributes to
saving potable water for other purposes.”

“Thanks to the commitment from the Dutton-Littleproud Government if elected, one of our top priorities
for the future will be possible. We are very fortunate to have candidates who have listened to our
needs and fought the case for the future of Northam, and I urge the other political parties to make a
similar commitment,” President Antonio added.

The Shire of Northam has funds to commit to upgrades, but the scale of works required put this project
outside of the realms of possibility without financial contributions from elsewhere. The commitment will
ensure that re-use water is able to be used and does not end up pumped into the Avon River.

This project aligns an action in the Shire of Northam’s Council Plan: Undertake upgrading of water
reuse system and is a key focus of the Priorities for the Future advocacy on behalf of our local
community.
