The Shire of Northam has received multiple complaints of “rotten egg” odours in close proximity to the river.
Please be advised that this smell is likely from the release of small amounts of hydrogen sulfide associated with the decomposition of organic materials in the river.
The low water level and continued seasonal high temperatures have likely seen an increase in bacteria which convert sulfur materials into hydrogen sulfide. Smelling hydrogen sulfide does not mean it will harm your health.
The Shire of Northam suggests keeping windows closed when the odour is noticeable and not engaging in rigorous outdoor activities close by the river if possible. The next significant rainfall event is likely to eliminate any odours.
Further information on hydrogen sulfide can be found here.
